Went to the shore yesterday by myself Ocean City. I swam me and the ocean. Also read, looking out at the ocean from the boardwalk. Got saltwater taffy and ate at a homey little diner. Got back to Philly with just 35 cents for carfare. Home at 9:30. Saturday is our regular day off during the summer, of course, because we use Sundays to present the ministry in different churches.

Larry is really ingenious. You know those habitrail cages for hamsters you can just keep adding on to them with those connecting tube tunnels? Well, Larry made a whole new cage and tube from chicken wire, and made a playwheel for his hamsters out of a candy tin! He said he figured he could make them better than he could buy them. Cheaper too. His hamsters are fascinating little creatures with their cheek pouches to store food.

I had told Barb I would go half with her to send Sondra to camp. But today she told me Sondra's been gone for 2 days and her parents have taken out another warrant on her. Donald said he's seen her up Ronald's way, so drunk she'd wet on herself. Barbara and Thomas, her parents, drink an awful lot. I guess they're sending Phyllis, Sondra's little sister, down south to live.

So, Barb asked if I'd go half on Clara, Ronnie's 15 yearold aunt, instead! She'd seen Clara, who said she wanted to go, and I sure pray that she shows up tomorrow, Lord, I know Barb and Ronnie are very concerned about her. She hasn't seen much but drugs, sex, and booze in her fifteen years.

Barb said Ronnie was very disappointed and angry this afternoon. His employer paid him yesterday 13 dollars for four days of work, 8:00 to 5:00! Ronnie's only fifteen and he doesn't have working papers, so this guy really took advantage. I guess Ronnie quit. He was so pleased that he had found a job, and Barb was encouraging him because he could learn something useful in an auto body shop. I think John's going to call him for Jr. Counseling if he will. And there's a possibility of a job with Matt Gallashaw, from the Chapel, at Camp Skymount. I pray that something will work out for him.

Long day today (9:00 AM to 11:00 PM) with operation Saturation in Frankford. Where's Frankford? Well, it's kind of considered a suburb, I guess it's a middle class section of Philadelphia, more towards the outskirts of the city. This past year, Reverend Drury spoke at the Ferman United Presbyterian Church I guess he challenged the church to have an outreach into the neighborhood, and ended up by volunteering the Teen Haven Staff to do it for them, I guess. Anyway, we're committed to them for all this week in Operation Saturation, which consists of VBS clubs out in the neighborhood, on porches and in backyards, visitation, street and playground work, and evening film ministry. We'll be eating at the church for lunch and supper. Those ladies fix good meals! But I feel weird they all look at us like we're the experts and I ain't hardly no expert!

We have one Bible club in the morning on one of church lady's front steps (They have nicer row houses in this area of the city they're newer, and have nice big yards, comparatively, one at another lady's home, in her back yard her house is within walking distance of the church, and a Bible club at night on the Church lawn. Spent most of the day canvassing for kids. We worked mostly with white, middle class kids, and some Spanish quite different. It's really HOT! It feels so good to walk into that church when we're due there for a meal! I stand right in front of that air conditioner and let it blast on me!

I guess I should tell you who's all working with us. It's girls week at camp, so Doug is directing us. Charlene, Stu, a summer staffer from Missouri, only 17; and Jim, a summer staffer from New England, I think, only 17; Bone, and Larry.

It seems a little harder to get children to come to VBS in this neighborhood; in the first place, they aren't all out on the street it's harder to find them.

Donald is staying here tonight. He's kind of mad at Larry, because Larry was tough with him today said if he didn't work with us, he couldn't stay with us. Donald's job didn't come through with Model Cities. Larry told him it was a shame he was always trying to get something for nothing. Don't know what outcome will be. Donald really likes Larry.
