10th and Thompson Bible Study today. I about dropped my teeth. Karen Green and Connie Halley wanted me to start a Bible study with them! I’ve been trying to make contact with those teenage girls all year. Connie was in my very first cabin at camp when I was on summer staff. Karen, her friend, was in another cabin. She was a really tough acting girl and had brought a knife to camp. Well, anyway, I pray that God will work it out. I’m really pleased with the progress June Green is making. She’s Karen’s younger sister. When she first started coming to Bible club, she lived up to her reputation of being "bad." I hesitated inviting her back to club because I didn’t want to hassle with it. But these past three weeks she hasn’t gotten any marks on her attitude chart, she answers the questions well without raising her hand, and then when I call on her, she gets this silly grin and doesn’t answer or even try. And she’s always happy when it’s time for Bible club and says, "I like to go to Bible club!"

She seems to need a lot of love, discipline, attention, encouragement, and prayer. She seems to have socialization problems with the other girls.

Wednesday nights seem to be rather busy for Joey, our friendly neighborhood pusher across the street. It was 1:00 in the morning, and I was drifting off to sleep when suddenly a loud "Joey!" shattered the night.

One of his customers. Wide-awake now, I laid there waiting.

"Hey! Joey!"

Joey was never too prompt about servicing his clients. And he kept such awful business hours. It's funny how importunate his clients are though. This one was rather desperate because just as I was drifting back to sleep--

"C'mon, man, I gotta get some stuff!" the guy yelled right out on the street.

I wondered why the police never got Joey with advertising like that.

"Hey, let me get my shit, man!"

Sounds of banging on the door. Finally, impatiently, "Hey, Joey, you gonna come to the door or not!"

This went on for the space of fifteen or twenty minutes. Then I didn't hear any more, so I assume Joey finally opened the door. Larry, Delores, and I have discussed it--and one of these nights, around 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning, we're going to stand underneath his window and yell, "Joey!"

When he sticks his head out, we'll holler, "Did you know Jesus loves you?"

(and then we'll run).
