Letter to my Aunt Claudine: February 20, 1973

Well, how are you all? Looks like the Philly teachers have finally got it together. The strike, which lasted about 2 or 3 months, is over, and kids should be back in school by Monday. There was going to be a general strike to back up the teachers, so I guess Mayor Rizzo finally buckled under.

We went visiting up at 23rd Diamond yesterday. There are eight 12-story high apartment buildings. To give you an idea of how rough it is, the gas meter men go in with a police escort! We met a mother on the 12th story of building 2305, and she said, "I never go out. The elevator doesn't usually work and I have to walk up 12 stories. I can't carry my two babies down and up, and I can't leave 'em alone here."

Talk about a trapped situation! I know from experience that those elevators are terrible--we got stuck between two floors on one for a short time.

Love in Christ,

Jeanne
